The rise and rise of Edi Gathegi

Edi Gathegi is a Kenyan-American Film, Stage and Television Actor born in Nairobi on 10th March 1979, before relocating to Albany, California where he grew up. He used to play basketball while being an undergraduate at University of California Santa Barbara until he injured his knee in the game.

Edi decided to join acting classes as an easier course and a good distraction from basketball. Little did he know that he will fall in love with acting! He later studied at New York University’s graduate Acting program at the Tisch School of the Arts, graduating in 2005.

He began his career in theatre and some of his credits include Two Trains Running at the globe theater, as you like it, Twelfth Night, Othello, A midsummer Night’s Dream and Cyrano de Bergerac. Edi Gathegi became a household name when he played baron Jacobee and Matias Solomon in Into the Badlands and The Blacklist TV series respectively.

His cinematography includes Crank (2006), Gone Baby Gone, The Fifth patient, Death sentence (2007), Twilight (2008), My Bloody Valentine 3D, The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009), This is not a movie (2010), X-Men: First Class, Atlas shrugged, The Twilight saga: Breaking Dawn-part 1 (2011), Shiva and May (2014), This Isn’t funny, Aloha, Criminal Activities (2015), The Watcher (2016), and Transformation awaits which will be announced later.

We could say that Edi Gathegi is flying the Kenyan flag high just as Lupita Nyong’o   .It’s time we nurture young talents and support them on their way up. If we believe in them, nothing can stop them and as Lupita once said, all dreams are valid! Hollywood is waiting.
