The Junior NBA Nairobi League was commissioned by the National Basketball Association In partnership with Ford Motor Company back in February. The basketball league championship was to start in June and involve 30 schools which have an NBA team. Junior NBA Nairobi basketball league is played just the same as America’s NBA which has Eastern and Western conference, allowing the top 8 teams to qualify for playoffs.
The Kenya Basketball Federation and Kwese Sports are part of the partnership which seeks to nurture young boys aged below 14, with basketball skills. The boys are taught fundamental skills that are necessary for a career in basketball. Teams have enjoyed playing on NBA branded jerseys.
Three and a half months down the tournament line, the junior NBA Nairobi league reached the final game stage at the Africa Nazarene University on Saturday. Mathare based Slum Dunk Nets defeated Family Kenya warriors by 37-16.
Great displays were seen as the Nets countered the warriors on the break. Lovings Otieno scored 10 points as he was named the game’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).
“Lovings has been incredible. He’s a very hardworking boy and doesn’t miss training. Even when he’s alone on the court, he still does the same drills that he was taught days before,” said Nets coach, Sylvester Ndindi.
The second tournament is slated to start in August.
