Bale Stuns Barcelona as Madrid wins Copa del Rey Cup


Real Madrid lifted the Copa del Rey president’s cup for a 19th time after defeating Barcelona 2 – 1 at the Mestalla. Madrid opened the scoring through Angel Di Maria early in the first half only for Barcelona to draw level through Bartra at the hour mark. Gareth Bale was the hero of the night as he put the tie to rest with just five minutes to go with a superb finish.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side missed talisman Cristiano Ronaldo who was injured in their UEFA Champions league 2 nil defeat to Borussia Dortmund but Isco impressed. Barcelona who are the record winning Copa del Rey champions with 26 titles had defensive problems with veteran goalkeeper Victor Valdez, defenders Carlos Puyol and Gerard Pique being sidelined due to injuries.

Barcelona’s loss summed up recent poor performances after crashing out of the UEFA Champions league after being defeated by Atletico Madrid and losing to Granada in La Liga over the weekend. On the other hand, Real Madrid picked p their first silverware of the season from King Juan Carlos of Spain. It was the first major achievement of Gareth Bale’s football career and a night to remember.
